Open Studio: Figure Drawing

In September 2008, I will be hosting a figure drawing open studio at Western Avenue Studios in Lowell MA. for artists who are passionate about drawing and painting from life. Drawing from model is the best way of learning to draw the figure. One can use plastic, plaster casts or photos, but drawing from life affords an artist the opportunity to connect in a way that these methods do not. When one draws from a model, something takes place in those moments of creation. The model, living, breathing and posing before the artist gives the artist the opportunity to observe the miracle that being human is. The artist with their talents and tools translates the miracle of life before them with their chosen medium onto paper, canvas or clay. I strongly believe the work produced working from a model to be a joint creation between the model and artist, and one that is sacred one too. To me, being in an open studio with a model working alone or with other artists is like going to church or meditating. I view the time to be sacrosanct, from which I leave refreshed and humbled by the gift that a model is and by the creations that spring forth from me. Each session leaves me feeling deeply grateful, and happy to be an artist.
